Starter relay sticking closed
I have a 1990 F-250 with a 351 CID. About a year ago, I replaced the solenoid and since then, I have a STRANGE problem with the relay sticking closed, that is, when you let off of the key, it keeps cranking. Even if I pull the low power actuator wire, it is still cranking!! I have now replaced three of them (two in a week) under warranty, but there must be something I am missing. I have checked the low power side and it is switching power on and off from the key as it should. If I check starter side of the relay, it is providing continuous power, even when the low power wire is disconnected. If I test the relay off the vehicle, the relay seams to engage/disengage when power is applied to the low power pole, so it acts like it is working properly, but the starter side is getting power all of the time. I doubt I have gotten three defective relays from Borg Warner in a year, but it is remotely possible.
So it appears that these relays are sticking closed (connected all the time) after a very short period of time in service. Does anyone have a clue why this is happening? |
icommunity.I currently have the same issue with my 1987 F150. Have you found the cause of the problem? I have no idea where to even start looking.
