1997 F150 v6, knocking after fuel pump replacement...

Had fuel pump replaced, $600. The mechanic tried to sell me on another $700 repair (ball joints), claiming it would be a danger to drive within a month.

Well, 2 weeks later I go out and turn the key over and it starts up but it sounds like someone is under the hood banging to get out.
Ideas??

You need to verify that the noise is either lifters or rod noise. Does the noise settle down after it gets warmed up? Does the noise come on when loading the engine?

I tried to start it, there was a loud backfire so I turned it off quickly. Went back later, won't start. The key turns all the way, but nothing engages.

But the knocking is gone.
