I have a 2006 f 150 V8 5.4L 3v, My truck just truned 27,000 miles I just read about the plug problems with this engine. I went to my Ford dealer to find out more info. They said if it`s not broken then don`t fix it.
I asked what it would cost to have the plugs pulled,they stated $25.00 per plug and $250.oo and if they brake an other $45.00 per broken plug.
I have read that most of these problems have been around 39,000 miles when people start uping plugs.
I am going on the idea that to taking care of this problem now would make more since than to wait .

Has any one out there had this problem with this type of low mileage?????

Second, I have good news, and I have good news for you:

1) You can get your Motorcraft plugs from O'Reilly's for $7.99 each.

2) The Ford dealer told me that if the plugs are changed by 60K miles, they normally don't break, so I think you are well within that.

I've only broke 2 plugs off in a head my whole life. Both on the same head. And both plugs came out with a large EZout. Not sure how much room there is on your engine. But if the plug does break, getting the thread part out should be real bad.

On these plugs in the 2004-2007 5.4L, it's the gnd extension that seizes up from carbon, and breaks off. Here are some photos of the plugs:

OK, I can see how that works now, not a real good design IMO. It's not the threads that are seizing, it's the smooth part.

I had 5 plugs break at 67k miles. Thats with a Ford tech removing them too. If I were to do it again I would wait until the truck started running wrong instead of trying and being proactive.

champion makes a 1 piece plug for the 3V now, the hex, thread, and extension are all one piece, so they dont break off. you might wanna look into those. and also they have a 5/8 regular size hex. link here: i've heard good things about them from the local mechanics around here.

I haven't heard many good things about them from people that have ran them on other boards.
