Big thump in drive train when downshifting
Hello all. I have a 2010 F-150 4x4, and most of the time, but not all the time, when I either drop into passing gear, or sometimes between 6th and 5th, there is a loud bang and a hard hit either in the transmission or the rear end. Has anyone ever heard of this before? It is more pronounced when pulling a load, or at least going uphill. One shop told me that it was just the nature of the beast, and that a software update could fix it temporarily. Does this sound right?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Have you checked the universal joint? Maybe it's worn out. Has the transmission fluid been changed often since the vehicle was new? That rough shifting is just going to make things worse. I had that happen in a front wheel drive car. Over time it started to mess up my CV joints and motor mounts. I changed the transmission fluid twice and then it fixed it. But the F-150 is a different animal. I'm not sure if you can buy a new U-joint, or the entire drive shaft has to be replaced. It's been a long time since I've seen one of those go out. Usually seen it happen in people who beat on their cars doing 5,000 RPM clutch dumps. With a 4X4, I would be sure to change all of the fluids in the front and rear differentials as well as the transfer case. All of that stuff has to be maintained. Most people ignore it because it's expensive. That's the nature of the beast when you own a 4X4. Then the vehicle gets high mileage and then you start to get problems like you described. People don't set aside a few hundred bucks to maintain the transmission, differentials and transfer case. My friend had a Dodge Durango and his all went out... $3800 at the dealer to fix.

Thank you for the reply. I know a couple of years ago there was a leak in the transmission. When they fixed the leak, they topped off the transmission fluid, supposedly.
The truck currently only has about 13000 miles. I heard somewhere else about getting the ECM reprogrammed, which I did about a week ago, and to my disappointment, it still does it.
I will look into the u-joints though.
Thanks again,
Mike
