Default F150 - White smoke/hissing

Good afternoon all, first time post but I'm a little lost as to what I need to do and figured I would start here before taking it somewhere.

First off, I just purchased a 1984 F150 manual transmission from a friend of mine. It's got just under 80k miles on it and has been running great. I've replaced the gearbox but that's about it so far.

The other day my wife was driving it home and this is what happened in her words (she has driven a manual far longer than I have and had to teach me):

"About 1 mile from home I was at a stop sign, started in the wrong gear (3rd) but just went slow. Switched to neutral and got into 1st. About 500 ft later, was a stop light I stopped at. As i was idling, I started smelling a slight burning smell and white smoke started coming up from the middle of the truck (not the front). Light turned green, smoke slowed down as I accelerated, and when I slowed down again, the smoke got worse. Drove the last 1/2 mile home with a hissing sounds and white smoke coming up out of the right side underneath."

We have a video showing some of it but it's too big for the website and can't post it.

Any ideas what it may be? We were thinking clutch but she was able to shift just fine even with all that going on.

I've posted a pic of the truck and then a 2nd one of a spring that has busted off something. I'm not super savvy with car repairs but have good friends that are and that can help. I just need any ideas as to what may be wrong so I can start from somewhere.

Thank you!
