'94 f150 XL inline 6+dual gas tank issues
Hello,
Just got this truck. It has 2 gas tanks. We were told only one was working. Myhusband is trying to trouble shoot the problem and needs to know where the pumps are and the switch.
He is thinking the pumps are in the tanks. If we have the battery disconnected and touch connector to the positive the terminal we hear a little whirring noise. Can not place where it's source. It lasts for only a few seconds. Listened at both tanks and it was not from there.
If he could figure out how to open the dash and look at the switch, he might find something there. Any clues on how to reach that?
Called the dealer and they said they think they remember the tanks would be 21 gal (front_ and 11 gal (rear). We understand it is the front one that is working.
Regards,
C & J

He's correct, the fuel pumps are inside the top of the tanks, so to actually get to them you're pretty much stuck with either dropping the tanks (painful) or pulling the bed (more painful). Not much experience with that..The switch on the dash I can be a bit more helpful with though.
You have to remove the section of the dash around the steering wheel, there should be two trim strips that pop out (GENTLY!!) on either side. I used a flat screwdriver to remove them. Should be a screw under each side, like this.
Aside from those, the only thing I remember you have to remove is the **** for the headlights. if you turn them on, and turn the brightness down about half way, you should see a slot behind the switch. Your key makes a handy little tool to press the tab in said slot and pull the **** off.
Just be VERY gentle with the tank selector switch, it's fragile, and if you do decide to take it apart to clean all the contacts, just be very careful not to lose/break any of the small parts. Super glue became my best friend with that project
