Today i bought a 79 f150 with a inline 6. Strong running truck and the 4x4 works awsome. Shifts into gear great no grinding or issues. I only paid 1000 for it so its a beater, but i think i got a steal. The one problem i am a little worried about is the engine tick. Doesnt do it so bad while idel or on decel, but the faster you go the faster the tick gets. It also has a litle whine that gets louder the faster you go. Any ideas?

 

Tick might be a sticky lifter. You can try Seafoaming the engine and see if it helps. To use Seafoam, warm up the engine, suck up a 1/3 of the can via a vacuum hose (preferably one pne the intake manifold) into the motor. Pour the rest of the can into the crankcase via the oil filler. Shut down the truck and let it sit for 30 minutes or so. then fire up the truck and take it for a run, with some heavy full throttle uses along the way. Get back home, drain the oil, change the oil filter, add new oil and see if the tick has gone. If not, then you might have to pull the lifters.

The whine...probably the transmission or differential.

 

Some say change the plugs after sea foam.

 

Yep...not a bad idea. I've Safoamed a few cars in my days and never changed the plugs directly afterwards, but it does make sense. Same thing if you Seafoam the fuel tank, after you've run the tank through, replace the fuel filter.
