Hi all newbie here.
My future father-in-law just bought a 1984 f-150 XLT. He bought it without any input from me... not that he needs it but.....

It had an exhaust leak, which I fixed. I took it around the block and realized that it will not shift out of 2nd gear. He took it up to get new shock and brakes (which he paid too much for) and the told him that it didn't have a working xfer case....

Question is...how do I find out what it has in it xfer case and transmission wise. I tried decoding the VIN number but I can't get access to that extra information. The tag on the xfer case is there.

Any help would be appreciated. I plan on rebuilding both. FYI, I rebuilt the c4 in my '68 cougar....
