Default Fuel pump change

Hi I drive a 1987 f150 flareside with the 5.0 302 but lately it seems to be lagging/delaying when I press on the accelerator. It has even stalled on me in he worst possible spots and did not start again for a couple hours. I have done all the regular tune ups like changing the spark plugs, wires, air filter etc. Tomorrow I plan on changing the inline fuel pump and the manual I am using says to relieve the fuel pressure before changing but I changed the inline fuel filter without relieving the pressure so I was wondering if it would mess anything up I didnt relieve the pressure first. Also if I do need to relieve the pressure what would be the best way thanks.

It's for safety reasons. You can release the pressure from the schrader valve on the fuel rail, or pull the fuel pump fuse while it is running.
