Default 2001 5.4 Hard start and instruments go crazy

My F1 50 has been having trouble getting started. I take off the terminals and clean them put them back on and with the jump it will start again. Whenever it goes to start the gauges, speedometer the tachometer all swing over to the far right the first couple seconds and then drop back to their normal area. any suggestions what might be wrong? I have replaced the neg terminal clamp as it broke through corrosion. Am thinking about replacing the pos clamp to see if that helps.

Replace both your battery cables. Also check the ground strap from the motor to the frame and make certain that its connected at both ends.

Yes as he says. Make sure the GROUND battery cable and the POSITIVE battery cable and in like new condition. the starter draws a lot of current and any poor connections will show up real fast and cause all sorts of unexplained things. I like to use a flat braided strap from engine to the frame or wherever the NEG side of the battery cable connects. Sometimes after you crank and hard start fails. Take your hand and feel the cable ends and stuff, If its HOT, there is your problem, to much resistance, wants to be a toaster element instead of a battery cable. Remember the NEGATIVE cable is just as important as the POSITIVE cable...
good luck
